I’ve been asked to design around some interesting objects but this one stands out..a listed pigsty!!! ..which is about all there was when we started making a garden from the field around this lovely converted oast house.
It is very exciting to have such a large, almost blank, canvas. The client’s requirement list was long…pond, veg area, manageable amounts of planting, some enclosed parts and some open to the view, lawn and rougher grass, an orchard, a terrace by the house..
The area is broken up by blocks of planting and a few hedges. Mown paths through rougher areas of grass draw the explorer around the space to find the various highlights. The only formal arrangement is in the vegetable garden by the pigsty. A greenhouse is tucked away there too. The terrace is sheltered by some planting and large enough for eating and relaxing but a generous step out onto the lawn invites to the garden beyond.
