Accenture Inspires New Designer at Chelsea:

Miriam Book breaks 'Through The Glass Ceiling'

The employment philosophy of leading international management and technology consultant Accenture has inspired the 'Through The Glass Ceiling' Show Garden for this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Miriam Book, a first timer at Chelsea, aims to illustrate Accenture's commitment to a harmonious work/life balance and increased representation of women at alllevels of their organization. She sees the Show Garden as a symbol of a relaxed, harmonious existence, where time should be taken to unwind and enjoy the surrounding scents and colours, whilst assessing the priorities in one's life.

The garden is divided by a retaining wall interspersed with back-lit glass blocks, reminiscent of an office block. The two levels created represent 'Aspiration' (lower) and 'Achievement' (upper).

A spiral 'career' ladder ascends from the lower level through a jagged opening in the glass ceiling supported by steel poles, to the upper level. Glass shards jut out from a central water pool as if they have fallen from the glass ceiling above. Water cascades down from a computer-shaped water feature, symbolising the flow of ideas and inspiration from the "achievers" to the aspirational pool of talent below.

The upper level is planted with a combination of vibrantly coloured shrubs, trees and climbers with red and bronze foliage and flowers of purples and oranges to represent the energy within a well-balanced workforce. Vivid and bold, this level will display a dark orange Knap Hill azalea, Photinia ´ fraseri 'Red Robin' , Cordyline australis 'Purple Tower', Pieris 'Forest Flame', Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant', Delphinium 'Black Knight' Iris 'Braithwaite'and many more.

In contrast the lower level planting scheme is far more muted using silver leaves, green and white variegated foliage and plants whose flowers are either white or pastel versions of the colours used in the upper level. Plants used will include Spirea nipponica 'Snowmound', Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Variegata', Campanula 'Chettle Charm', Diascia 'Joyce's Choice', Delphinium 'Guinevere' and Iris 'Blue Shimmer'.

Specially created sculptures depict the transformation of the undefined form of an aspiring individual into a polished, dynamic achiever.
